A Guide to Table Saw Fence Mechanisms: Rack and Pinion Explained

Cover for A Guide to Table Saw Fence Mechanisms: Rack and Pinion Explained

The reliability of your table saw depends heavily on the locking mechanism of its fence. Let’s break down the two most common types you’ll encounter.

1. Friction Lock Fences (T-Square Style)

Popularized by Biesemeyer, this is the standard for cabinet saws. It locks by cam-action at the front rail, creating immense friction that squares the fence to the table.

Pros: Rock-solid locking, easy to micro-adjust by tapping. Cons: Requires a heavy steel tube rail system, not easily portable.

2. Rack and Pinion Fences

Most famously used on DeWalt portable saws, this system uses gears on both the front and rear rails that turn simultaneously when you rotate an adjustment knob.

Pros: The fence is essentially guaranteed to stay parallel to the blade. Very easy to adjust one-handed. Cons: If the gears collect too much sawdust, they can bind.
